Traveling With Your Cat

 Travel 101

Traveling With Your Cat doesn’t have to be a nightmare; in fact, many cats enjoy traveling and experiencing new environments. Most cats, however, require a little bit of preparation before you go. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Start with shorter trips, then work up to longer ones. Don’t try traveling cross-country with your cat on her first trip. Make sure she’s up to the task by starting her out on short day trips. Make sure she’s comfortable in her crate or carrier, and be sure to stop often along the way to let her roam around (on a leash!) and eat or drink something.

  • Make sure your cat’s vaccinations are current, and get a general checkup before you leave. If your cat is not in top health, traveling with her won’t be good for either of you.

  • Update your kitty’s tags. In the event that she gets away from you, you’ll want your latest information on her collar. Include a cell phone number, or the number you can be reached at once you arrive at your destination.

  • Stock up the car or a travel bag with all the necessities, including food and water bowls, favorite toys or blankets, an extra leash, some treats, and a portable litter box and scooper.

  • Call ahead to find hotels that allow cats. There are many pet-friendly hotels across the country, but you don’t want to show up unannounced and find out they’ve changed their policy. Plan ahead and make arrangements before you arrive.
