Weight gain can cause heart disease and arthritis in dogs. It is important to keep them in a healthy weight range so they can live a long, healthy life.
All day
feeding is best as long as your dog has some self-control and there aren't other pets sneaking it from him. This should allow for the dog to eat only when he is hungry and not overeat, knowing there is always more food where that came from. If this method doesn't work for you, try 2-4 small meals per day given in regular, predictable intervals. Also, restrict your dog from eating table food. Make sure children understand the rule of not giving the dog their food too.

Does My Dog need a Special Diet?
If your dog is already overweight you need to be especially careful how much and what kind of food he is getting. There are some weight management foods on the market or your vet can prescribe a special diet to help with the weight loss.
Getting Regular Exercise
Another key to a healthy dog is
exercise. Maybe you notice a pattern of your dog taking frequent naps throughout the day or just cuddling and lounging around. It may be time to shake up his routine. Have regular play time with your dog and schedule a daily
walk with him. Slowly build up the speed and length of the walk over time.
