If you have to take a trip, Dog Boarding might be your only solution for keeping your pooch cared for. Image

Dog Boarding Tips

  • Research boarding facilities to find the best one. Not all boarders are alike; they differ greatly, in fact, in quality of care and services provided. Ask around for recommendations in your local area. Your vet or dog trainer may have some favorites.

  • Interview the facility before making a decision. Have a list of questions to ask the facility owners. ImageThese questions could include what type of emergency services are available, how are the dogs housed, how often are they exercised, are large and small breeds kept together, and how many people are on staff throughout the day or night.

  • Tour the facility to get a look at the conditions before making any arrangements. It’s a good idea to stop by unannounced so you get a real look at the facilities without any kind of preparation on the staff’s part. You’ll want to see how the dogs are housed, how clean the facilities are, and how the dogs are being treated.

  • Make the facility aware of your dog’s special needs. Does he have a medical condition? Is he frightened of loud sounds? Any facility that’s reputable will be able to accommodate almost any special need. Be up-front about your dog’s idiosyncrasies to ensure that he’ll be cared for despite them.

  • Listen to word of mouth. Ask other dog owners about their boarding experiences with local facilities. You can sometimes also find information online in local forums about your neighborhood boarders. If you don’t know anyone to ask, request references from the boarding facility and follow up on them.
