Saltwater aquariums are harder to maintain than freshwater tanks but the payoff can be spectacular. Here are the Top Ten Tropical Fish.

  • Surgeons are vibrant fish named for the scalpel-like defensive spines that grow at the base of their tails.

  • Basselets are available in red, orange, yellow and purple and can grow to six inches in length. Basselets require live food.

  • Triggerfish, named for their ability to use their dorsal fins to prevent themselves from being pulled from a hiding place, have sharp, outward-facing teeth.

  • Angels are among the loveliest and most unique aquarium fish. They are also among the most difficult to maintain as they're sensitive to minor changes in water quality and can be difficult to feed.

  • Clownfish are the fish that often lure aquarium enthusiasts to the hobby. If you decide to pair yours with an anemone it will become territorial.

  • Boxfish, named for their boxy appearance, are especially challenging to maintain and release toxins when under stress. Not for beginners.

  • Butterflyfish are good community tropical fish that require a place to hide. Do not combine with live coral or anemones.

  • Lionfish are really impressive with their stunning coloration and flowing fins. But be aware that they are aggressive carnivores and that their long spines are dangerous and poisonous.

  • Mandarins boasts bright patterns of royal blue, purple and orange. Their peaceful nature makes them a good choice for community tanks.

  • Squirrelfish are most often chosen for their striking red color. They do require lots of tank space and are very active, often disturbing quieter fish. A good choice for a solitary tank.
