Aquatic Plant Species

There are more than 100 varieties of aquatic plants available for aquarium enthusiasts. Here's an overview of Aquatic Plant Species.

Coldwater Plants

Many beginners will opt for the good old gold fish and its more showy cousins, all of which love to eat their vegetables. If your aquarium is dominated by these voracious veggie eaters, steer clear of expensive, slow-growing plants in favor of tougher, faster growing varieties including Bacopa Monnieri, Cardamine Lyrata, Ceratopterus Cornita, Microsorum Pteropus, Sagittaria Subulata and Vallisneria Spiralis. An aqauatic plant specialist at your local pet shop can also direct you to some recommended plant species.

Tropical (Warm Water) Plants

A warmer environment is ideal for lush and thriving aquatic plants. Choose from among many common favorites for a verdant backdrop with minimal fuss. Among these are all varieties of Anubius, Aponogeton Crispus, Crinum Natans, most varieties of Cryptocoryne, E. Macrophylus, E. Osiris, Ludwigia Arcuata, all varieties of Microsorum, Shinnersia Rivularis and all varieties of Vallisneries.

Saltwater Aquarium Plants

Most plant varieties find the salinity of marine aquarium too harsh, but there are some that will tolerate it. Among them are all varieties of Microsorum, all varieties of Anubias, Egeria Densa, all varieties of Vallisneria and several varieties of Hygrophila.

Choosing the Right Plants

When selecting the plants for your aquarium, consider species that will complement one another and offer contrast too for the most interesting look. Combine plants of different leaf color, size, texture and shape for the best results, always keeping in mind what will thrive best in the type of aquarium you'll be placing them in.
