Horse Workhorse Breeds

If the main reason you are purchasing a horse is for work, then you’re probably interested in Horse Workhorse Breeds. Here is everything you need to know about these horses.

The best workhorses are the strong ones from central Europe, also known as coldbloods. Some of the most prominent breeds are discussed below.

Belgian

This horse is also known as the Barbant or Belgian Heavy Draught, and is the product of centuries of breeding. They are handsome, powerful horses, with a short back, deep girth, and short legs with a great deal of feather. They also pack a lot of pulling power.

Clydesdales

Originally, these horses were bred for transporting coal. You might recognize them from those many Budweiser ads; they are typically brown or bay with a feathery look in the legs. This breed tends to be both gentle and teachable.

Shires

This breed is one of the largest horses in the world, but they are often gentle giants. They are black, brown, or grey, with a silken feather on the lower limbs. They were originally developed as an agriculture horse.

Fjord

This breed was originally used by Vikings in horse fighting. They usually have a dun coloring and eel stripe down back, as well as a crescent shaped mane. They are good for agricultural mountain work when a tractor can’t do the job.

Of course, these are only a few of the Horse Workhorse Breeds. The type you choose should be determined by the kind of work you'll want them to do.
