Horse Tack Leather Care

A number of supplies exist to help with Horse Tack Leather Care. Here's everything you need to know about this area of horse care and wellness.

Caring for Tack Leather

While care for a horse's health and wellbeing should be the priority of every owner, it is also important to care for the horse tack. Keeping the tack in premium condition will prolong the life of the equipment. Leather can develop mold, mildew, and even dry out and crack without proper care.

Finding the Proper Products

Leather conditioners and water repellant products should be applied to the horse tack to prevent the breakdown of the leather. These products will strengthen the leather and allow it to last longer.

It can also be advantageous to use these products on new horse tack. It will help cut down on the time it takes to break-in the leather by making the leather more supple and flexible.

When deciding upon which products to use, make sure it won't damage the metal components of the horse tack. Also consider whether or not the product will cause the tack to become sticky or greasy. With the right product, the leather will stay strong, clean, and flexible.

While tack leather should receive an initial treatment as a preventative measure, it should be cleaned regularly as well. Some cleaning products even allow you to wash the tack leather in a regular washing machine. Others require the user to simply wipe the solution directly onto the leather. Either way, the tack leather will remain stronger for an extended period of time with proper care.
