The Size of a Stall

Most experts recommend 12 feet by 12 feet, and as much vertical height as possible. Anything that gives a claustrophobic feeling works against the wild nature of a horse and can cause nervousness and anxiety.

The Setup of a Stall

There are no rules about what materials to use in the construction of your stall, but they are usually constructed of wood and metal. You definitely want the divisions in between to be strong, and make certain that they are high enough to prevent your horse from biting other horses. You may wish to place metal bars to prevent this behavior, but encourage interaction. Also, horses that are secured to their stall by rope must have adequate slack so they can sleep.

The Care of a Stall

The floor of a stall must be covered with straw. Regular mucking is of course, a requirement. Be certain that the water bucket is placed high enough to keep it from getting into the hay.

You should know that no horse can live it its stall 24 hours a day. Horses require regular exercise and fresh air, and must be taken outside every day. Make sure that your horse stall has easy access to a large, penned area where your horse can stretch his legs.
