Keeping Safe with Livestock Medication
A healthy livestock herd is crucial for your business to run properly, and part of keeping your animals in top health is to administer vaccinations and medications. Vaccinations can help your herds avoid the
dangerous diseases like tetanus, enterotoxemia, equine encephalomyelitis, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR).
If your animals contract a virus or infection, you’ll need to treat them immediately. Many medications for common ailments are available at livestock supply stores and also through the Internet. You should consult your veterinarian before administering anything you’re not already familiar with.
Properly keeping and storing your medications is important, too. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Keep all medications in locked cabinets so children cannot access them.
Store medications away from food for animals or humans.
Wash your hands immediately after handling or administering medications.
Buy medications as you need them, rather than keeping large 
stocks on hand that can expire.
Dispose of used needles and syringes according to EPA standards. These standards recommend discarding needles into a plastic container with a tight lid. Tape up the lid for extra security.
Avoid spreading disease by never reusing medical supplies.
Medications that consist of live vaccines or cultures can actually cause disease if used improperly.
If you are stuck by a needle after you use it on an animal, wash your wound carefully with water and soap, and consult your doctor immediately.
