The Fundamentals of Pet Mourning
For those who have loved and lost an animal, the pain and sorrow can match that of losing a family member or two-legged friend. When your pet dies, it’s natural to go through a period of mourning. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Don’t try and force yourself out of the grief. To eventually heal, you’ll need to allow yourself to go through the stages of grief. These stages include denial, bargaining, anger, guilt, and real sadness. You may experience the grief stages in different orders, and there is no time limit for how long each stage lasts.
Find a good listener or a support group. You’ll need someone who can listen to you and allow you to talk about the pain without trying to make you feel better immediately. Most average-sized cities have bereavement groups especially for pet owners, and you can find friendship and understanding about what you’re going through.
Don’t try and replace your pet immediately. You may want another dog or cat in time, but trying to ease your pain by immediately getting another animal will only make things worse. No animal can replace the one you lost; it would be unfair to the new animal to even expect it, and you’ll only end up disappointed.
