Traveling With Your Pet

Traveling With Your Pet can be nerve-wracking, but it doesn’t have to be a negative experience. Here’s everything you need to know about the subject.

Traveling With Your Pet Without Losing Your Sanity

Whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or automobile, your pet’s comfort and safety should be one of the top priorities. Travel can be stressful for animals, but here are a few ways to make it a little easier:

  • Make sure your pet is up to the task. If you need to go on a long road trip across the country, don’t pile your pooch into the car and expect her to do it effortlessly. Ensure that your dog or cat is able to travel by breaking her in on a few shorter trips before the big one. Take a day trip up to the mountains, and see how she copes. If she does all right, then take a weekend jaunt. If she handles that with aplomb, then she’s probably up to the challenge of the cross-country trip. If she’s not, consider boarding her or letting a friend keep her while you’re gone.

  • Update your pet’s ID. Make sure the information is correct on your pet’s ID tags, and include a temporary tag with the address and phone number of your destination, in case she is lost en route. If she’s traveling by plane in a crate, label the crate well on the outside, and tape a picture of your pet onto the top of the crate. Include any instructions about feeding or care, and make sure the flight attendants know there’s a live animal on board.

  • Stop when you can, and give your pet a break. If you’re traveling by car, make frequent stops for potty breaks and quick walks. Your pet will probably need to stop more often than you do, so keep that in mind. If you’re traveling by plane, you won’t be able to make stops, but ask the flight crew to make frequent visits to your pet in the cargo hold to make sure she’s doing all right on the trip.
