Pond Fish Nutrition

Properly feeding your pond fish ensures their good health, vitality and brilliant coloration. Here's what you need to know about Pond Fish Nutrition.

Provide a Balanced Diet for Your Fish

In an established pond, fish will find many delectable tidbits to dine on including algae, plants and insects. But providing a balanced fish food will ensure your fishes' good health. Nutritionally balanced commercial pond fish foods are readily available in pet stores, pond supply stores and online. Try foods with added carotene and spirulina algae to add vibrancy to red fish. Live foods such as worms, prawns and tadpoles are a nice addition to their diets as well. Lettuce is a favorite of kois and they will strip a head of lettuce bare in nothing flat.

Pond fish do best with small, frequent feedings. Not only will fish overeat given the opportunity, but overfeeding also results in increased ammonia levels. Never feed more than the fish can finish in five minutes. A little trail and error will help you discover the right quantity. Keep in mind that commercial pond fish food may be specially formulated for summer or winter feeding. In winter, your pond fishes' metabolisms slow down significantly, greatly reducing their nutritional requirements. Feeding fish high-protein diets in the summer will ensure that they have sufficient reserves to get through the winter. Try to remove any uneaten food after five minutes to avoid contaminating the pond. Pond equipment suppliers stock a fish food ring, a device that holds the food and allows for easy removal of excess food after the fish have had their fill.
