When choosing fish for your pond you'll want to consider the type you want as well as their health and vitality. Here's what you need to know about Choosing Pond Fish.
Koi, Comets or Goldfish?
Fancy goldfish can thrive in smaller ponds but they need to be brought inside during the cold winter months. If you have a pond that's at least 500 gallons and 18 inches deep, comets and shubunkin, single-tailed goldfish with brilliant coloration, are good options. Japanese koi require a pond size minimum of 1,000 gallons and water that is at least three feet deep, where they can stay warm as they winter over outside. All these fish are relatively easy to care for.
What to Look For
Of course, it's always best to start out with healthy fish. When choosing where to purchase your fish, look for a shop that sells a wide variety of fish and fish supplies. Ask lots of questions to test the caretaker's knowledge and note whether the aquariums seem well maintained. It may be wise to start out with a few inexpensive goldfish to test out a new pond. Established ponds are ready to receive highly prized fish. Look for fish that are active and have clear, blemish-free skin, scales and fins. Aquarium water should be clear, colorless and free of unpleasant odors. Ask whether fish are quarantined before being added to the tanks. Fish that haven't been quarantined can easily infect the entire population with parasites or diseases. For extra caution, quarantine your fish before adding them to your pond.
