Avoid Excess Handling

Reptiles and amphibians don't particularly enjoy being handled so owners should keep contact to a minimum. When you do handle your pets, keep in mind that they can absorb perfumes, lotions, insecticides, pesticides and soap from your hands. This can result in life-threatening illness and even death. These animals also often carry salmonella bacteria, which can be harmful to humans and other animals. For your protection and your pet's, always wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling your pet, taking special care to carefully rinse any soap off before handling it. Always keep handling to a minimum.

Watch Out for Toxic Chemicals

It is essential to your pet's health to keep its enclosure clean, but keep in mind that cleaning agents are extremely toxic to reptiles and amphibians. After cleaning the cage, be sure to thoroughly rinse all cleaning chemicals out before you return him to his home. If you're cleaning the area around the cage, be careful not to allow any spray, mist or fumes enter your pet's enclosure.

Reptiles are susceptible to other airborne toxins. Don't smoke cigars or cigarettes or allow other people to smoke near your pet. Secondhand smoke causes chronic eye, skin and respiratory disease in reptiles. If you allow your reptile access to a room, keep in mind that ingesting tobacco products could be lethal to him. Keeping your pets safe from poisoning is a serious responsibility. Educate yourself about what dangers may be lurking in your home.
