Choosing New Reptile

Before you go out and buy a reptile pet, do a little homework so you'll choose the right variety and be prepared to care for it. Here's what you need to know about Choosing a New Reptile.

Do Your Homework

Don't Imagemake the mistake of assuming the pet store workers are herpetology experts. Unfortunately, many pet shop workers have minimal training and do not understand the complexities of raising a healthy reptile pet. Do your own research on the types of reptiles available and what they require to thrive and then go out in search of your new pet companion.

Choosing the Right Pet

If you're a beginner, opt for an easy-to-care-for reptile variety. Leopard geckos are relatively small and undemanding and they're nocturnal so they don't require any special lighting. They also tend to be docile. They will require a supply of various insects to eat.

Bearded dragons do require special (and expensive) UVA/UVB lighting and a relatively large tank, but they are also docile and fun to watch. They require insects as well as fruits and vegetables to stay healthy.

If you're looking for a snake, consider a corn snake or ball python. Both Imagevarieties are docile and easy to care for. The biggest obstacle for most beginner snake owners is their diet requirements. You'll need to keep a supply of mice on hand for weekly feedings.

The most important thing when Choosing a New Reptile is finding a healthy animal. Look for animals with clean, clear skin free from injury and clean bellies and claws. Do the animals look filled out and firm, indicating proper nutrition and hydration? If possible, adopt your pet from a reputable breeder.
