Basic facts

Birds ravens are those large black birds that you can see all over the United States. They are the largest species of crow and can survive in all kinds of climates because they're highly adaptable.

You're more likely to find birds ravens in wooded areas, in the mountains and around cliffs. Birds ravens nest in cliffs or trees and usually lay 4-7 eggs at a time. When birds ravens are nesting you won't see too much of them because they get really secretive when they're protecting their babies.

Birds ravens will eat just about anything, which is why you'll frequently see them hanging around campsites, but they usually eat berries, seats and small insects.

Birds ravens are smart

Birds ravens may not be the prettiest bird to look at and they may not make the most pleasant morning sounds, but they're incredibly intelligent. In a sense, birds ravens are like vultures. They wait around patiently for other animals to gather food and then when the food's been gathered, they swoop in and take over. Overtaking a food source is generally easy for birds ravens because they're larger than most other birds and therefore can use their size to bully other birds out of the way.

Because of their tendency to raid other food sources, birds ravens are seen as very manipulative. They're lazy enough and smart enough that they actually will follow a pack of hunting animals, such as coyotes, and wait for them to kill and eat an animal. Then they move in and pick off the extras.

Do birds ravens really eat human flesh?

Many novelists and other tale spinners have used birds ravens as creepy, mysterious props in stories and creative fiction. In fact, many times birds ravens have been painted as small vultures, preying off human and animal flesh. When we really examine the facts, there appears to be some truth to this stereotype of the birds. Birds ravens will eat flesh. They like meat and they will eat it off of an animal that's been killed by another animal. However, it takes a long time for bodies to decompose (depending on the conditions the body is exposed to) so the flesh isn't pliable enough for the bird to tear off until the body's well into the decomposition phase. This is why birds raven pick out the easy things, such as eyeballs, first.
