Florida Birds

Many bird watchers plan vacations to Florida at all times of the year because Florida has many birds that you can't find in any other part of the country. Here's what you need to know about Florida birds.

Why Florida?

Florida is a great place to go bird watching because it has the everglades and many Florida birds are represented in the Everglades. The Everglades is unique from any other area of the United States because it's home to several bird and animals species that can't be found elsewhere. In fact, the everglades alone have more than 350 bird species even though they only make up a very small portion of Florida.

Also, because Florida is such a large and uniquely shaped state, there are many areas where you can go bird watching. The great thing is, each of these areas offers a different habitat and caters to different Florida birds. So, what you find in Northern Florida may be very different to what you find in the Everglades.

What kind of birds can I find in Florida?

In Florida you can find all kinds of birds, some you might even recognize from home because many Florida birds are migratory birds and live in different areas of the county in the summertime.

Florida has a lot of bald eagles. Though these birds are not just Florida birds and live in other areas of the country, they're not that easy to come by because they're numbers are dwindling. However, now there are estimates that there are more than 3,000 bald eagles in Florida. The increase in the bald eagle population in large part can be attributed to conservation efforts. Bald eagles will only hang out in Florida from late spring until the beginning of summer. Then they like to return home where it's cooler.

Florida also has Florida birds like flamingos, herons and other wading birds. These birds are fun to watch because they act differently than the song birds that many people see at home. Flamingos, for example, have legs that bend the opposite way of a human's. They're also bright pink and can stand in the funkiest positions.

Some Florida birds are ho-hum. Because Florida sees a lot of migratory birds that drop on down from the Northern states, Florida birds consist of a mix of exotic, rare and household birds. Bluebirds, robins and song birds are among many birds that like to take a winter holiday in Florida if only to be Florida birds for a couple of months.
