Grieving the Loss of your Bird

Grieving the loss of your bird can be as painful as grieving a lost friend or relative. Many bird owners don’t thing about the probability that they will outlive their bird when they get them, but it is more often a fact of life.

Like any grief, there can be many different levels, depending on the bird owner and their relationship with their pet. Factors like time and level of attachment can all play a part in this. This is true with both children and adults.

Some people do things like getting another pet (bird or otherwise) in order to relieve some of the grief. For some, however, this can only serve as a reminder of their loss, so it is not generally recommend that someone offers that advice to someone who is grieving the loss of their bird – or any pet, for that matter.

Friends and family can help you grieve the loss of your bird. If they are close enough to you, then they will probably know what kind of feelings you are having. You may receive kind word and card from them, and it can help to know that people realize the importance of your lost friend to you. Also, it is also sometimes good to talk about the feelings you have.

Depending on the type of loss, it may also help, in some circumstances to think positively. If there is no evidence of death or harm, then your bird may have been found by someone who will give your lost bird the same happy, healthy home that you have provided.

Counseling or reading books on pet loss can also help you with grieving the loss of yor bird. Many animal groups and foundations offer therapy and other forms of counseling. These are run by therapists and, veterinary students, and groups. Books have also been written in order to help bird and other pet owners to deal with their loss. There are also a great many support groups, which can be found online.

When grieving the loss of your bird, it is important to do whatever you know you need to do to help you through your grieving process, and hopefully this will not be a feeling you will have to go through often.
