Bird Socialization Tips

Bird socialization is an extremely important part of responsible bird ownership. Early training and socialization, usually between fledgling and around 18 months of age, is one important key in avoiding or minimizing behavioral problemslater. At this age, you can help the bird get used to her surroundings, people, and other animals before bad behaviors become habitual.

Bird socialization begins with getting the bird accustomed to her surroundings and the people she will interact with each day. Patience and consistency are keys to successfully socializing your bird. Talk to her often, in a soothing but cheerful manner. Give her plenty of time to warm up to you before handling her, and speak to her each time you enter the room. When handling her, be sure to do so carefully, bearing in mind that you are both still getting used to each other. If she tends to nip, you may want to wear gloves during the early stages of bird socialization. As she becomes more accustomed to you, this should no longer be necessary.

Bird socialization includes helping your bird adjust to the presence of other animals that live in your home. It is crucial to never leave your bird unattended around dogs or cats, since they will naturally be curious about the newcomer. Cats tend to be attracted to the movement of birds’ wings, and may try to catch the bird. Dogs are curious as well, and may try to get close to the cage to sniff and check out what is inside. Be sure the cage is stable and cannot easily be tipped over. Always be sure the cage door is securely latched. If you already have birds in your home, introduce a new bird slowly and carefully. Start by keeping the birds in their own cages and putting them within sight of each other. Gradually decrease the distance between the cages, until the birds are comfortable near each other. When you actually introduce the birds to one another, do so outside the cages, keeping a close eye on how they react to one another. It is often helpful to have another human companion with you, in case you need to separate the birds quickly.

Bird socialization with children takes time and patience. Be sure to prepare any children before the bird arrives, by explaining the need to be quiet and very gentle around the bird. Let them know that they should never shake the bird’s cage or make loud noises or sudden movements around the cage, since this can scare the bird. Introduce children and birds outside the cage slowly and with a good deal of supervision. Never let children play with birds without an adult present.

Proper bird socialization helps your bird adjust to his new environment. It also creates a stronger bond between you and your bird, and helps prevent problem behavior in the future.
