Read About Bird Breeds

With so many different kinds of Bird Breeds, choosing a new pet bird can be confusing. Here is a brief list of different birds you may consider when purchasing a new pet.

Small Birds

Smaller pet birds take up less space and require less cleaning time than larger birds will. However, they will still need plenty of attention and playtime with you. Here is a list of several smaller birds that make good pets.

  • Parakeets, or budgerigars, make excellent pets and are believed to be the most common domesticated bird. They are social creatures and enjoy toys and interaction with others, be they humans or birds. They come in a range of different colors and live an average of 8 years in captivity.

  • Finches do not typically enjoy being handled, but they are beautiful birds that can sing and whistle. It is best to keep finches in pairs, for a finch will be lonely if kept by itself. A domestic finch can live up to 5 years.

  • The cockatiel is a small parrot that is slightly larger than most parakeets. Generally they are light grey and white in color with orange cheek patches. While some cockatiels can talk, they are generally better at imitating whistles. Cockatiels generally live 15-20 years as pets.

    Medium and Large Birds

  • The African Grey parrot is generally considered one of the most intelligent of the domesticated birds. It is a medium-sized parrot that makes a loyal, affectionate pet, though it is not recommended for children. Their ability to mimic speech is considered the best among birds. African Greys live approximately 50 years in captivity.

  • Cockatoos are a member of the parrot family that boasts a large crest on their heads. Most birds are white with tinges of pink or salmon. Cockatoos have large, powerful beaks that can inflict serious damage; however, most domestic cockatoos are loving and affectionate. In captivity, cockatoos can live from 40 to 60 years.

  • Probably the bird that most people think of when the word "parrot" is mentioned, the macaws are beautifully colored, large, vibrant birds. They are also intelligent birds that require attention and playtime. Macaws are definitely a loud bird, constantly screeching and calling. Their life span is generally from 25 to 50 years.
