Read About Bird Emergency Prevention

Though it is to be hoped that our pets will always remain healthy and happy while with us, sometimes emergencies come up. Bird Emergency Prevention can be easily achieved by following this short list.

Quality Seed

Good-quality seed is a must when keeping a healthy pet bird. If your bird is exhibiting signs of sickness, remove any extraneous food products like seed bells, millet spray, and fruit or vegetables from its vicinity. Also remove the grit, for when a bird is sick, it will use too much grit, causing obstruction problems. Make sure to supply your bird with clean water once a day.

Keep the Cage Clean

Keeping your pet bird’s cage clean is one of the best ways to ward off infection and sickness. Buy a special cage cleaner from your veterinarian or a pet store and rinse your bird’s cage with it once a week as part of the regular cleaning routine. Make sure the paper at the bottom of the cage is cleaned as often as possible as well.

Things to Do If Your Bird Gets Sick

If your pet bird does become ill, here are a few basic actions that might help it get well soon.

  • Turn up the heat around your bird. A sick animal will require more heat than normal, so make sure that your bird is kept nice and warm to help it recover quicker.

  • Invest in some liquid vitamins and feed your bird by hand to keep its strength up. An ill bird will have low energy and will not eat healthily, and it will require constant monitoring.

  • Contact your veterinarian for medicine. If your pet bird has taken ill, don’t take any chances with its health. Take it in for a visit to the vet, who can provide medication for its specific problems.
