Read About Cat Bird Feeders

Cat birds are not the kind of birds that will not be drawn to bird feeders. Here's everything you need to know about cat bird feeders.

The cat bird

The cat bird is usually a grayish color and is called the cat bird because it sounds like a cat. The cat bird mimics a cat's meow, though it’s questionable exactly how close a cat bird call comes to a real cat's meow. A cat bird may sound like a cat, but will not hang around a bird feeder the way a cat will. Cat bird feeders are not easy to come by and your chances of seeing these birds at a feeder are not that great.

Cat birds live all over the United States and Canada, but they usually go south for the winter. The cat bird is a medium sized song bird that's gray with a black top. The cat bird relies on eating insects as its major food source and will prefer finding insects for itself rather than relying on cat bird feeders for its meal.

Cat birds will stray from bird feeders

Cat birds are secretive animals and prefer to stay away from humans. They are song birds, but they're different than many other song birds because they prefer privacy. They hand out in thickets and other dense areas, so the chances of you luring one to cat bird feeders is slim to none.

Aside from that, they eat insects. The cat bird uses its beak to flip over leaves and other debris that collects on the ground to find the insects. Bird feeders specialize in seeds, grain and pellets. They do not have insect deposits. In fact it would be impossible to create a bird feeder that regularly stored and dispersed insects, which is why cat bird feeders do not exist. A cat bird will also eat fruit and will make 80 percent of its diet fruit in the summertime. Again, fruit would be a very difficult food source to keep in cat bird feeders.

If you're looking for cat bird feeders because you're hoping to get a glimpse of the sly bird, you might want to try a different approach. Knowing something about birding and the animal will help your chances of seeing the bird. You could hang out in a thicket and arm yourself with a camera or some binoculars, but attempting to put up cat bird feeders would be an all around bad idea.
