Read About Canary Breeding

Canaries are a good bird for beginning breeders to breed. Here's some good info to know about canary breeding.

Building a relationship

To get any success from canary breeding you need to have one male canary and one female canary. Although you are probably rolling your eyes at this simple suggestion, it's an important one to pay attention to. With canaries it's hard to tell which bird is male and which is female so if you're not familiar with the birds, you should ask someone to help you figure out if you have one of each.

Though animals are not quite as picky as humans when it comes to breeding, they will fight with each other if they haven't had a long enough introduction. Before canary breeding, you should let the male and female get to know one another. Put them in cage that is divided by a metal partition. This way the birds will get to know each other and when they start snuggling, you can get rid of the divider and see if they mate.

Create an ideal breeding environment

Canaries will not and cannot breed if they're not in a proper environment. They need to have light for 12 full hours in order to be fertile and participate in canary breeding. You can either do this by putting the bird near natural light or use artificial light to stimulate the 12 hour cycle.

Eggs are made of proteins and if you do not give the female some kind of protein supplement to act in conjunction with high protein food, the eggs she lays after canary breeding will not be sustainable.

After the birds are put together and they mate, the female is going to want to make a nest. To facilitate this part of canary breeding, put a bunch of nesting material in the corner of the cage. When she is ready, the female will pull down this material and create a nest. Then she will lay her eggs.

The last part of completing successful canary breeding is making sure the chicks are well cared for. First you need to make sure that the mother is sitting on the nest. If she is not, you may have to intervene in order to keep the chicks safe, but you should consult someone who knows about canary breeding before doing so. Lastly, keep proving protein for the mother so she can feed the chicks. Green plants also have important nutrients that will keep the chicks healthy and help them survive after canary breeding.
