Read About Birds for Sale

Birds for sale from a breeder or pet shop allow you to take your time and find exactly the bird you are looking for. Deciding what type of bird to buy can be a difficult decision. Research different breeds to find out which is best for you, considering things like the general temperament of the breed, and its physical needs. Determine the breed that is the best match for your family and home. Be sure the breed of bird you adopt matches your lifestyle and environment. Some birds require a great deal of contact and interaction. Others do not require as much, but all breeds of birds will need love and attention. Be sure you have the time to devote to a new bird. If you are planning a vacation, a move, or a new baby, wait until you are "settled" again before bringing home a bird.

The Internet can be a great resource for locating bird breeders. In addition to finding breeders' own web pages, look for bulletin board and listservs of bird owners, to try to find feedback about particular breeders. While you may be able to buy a bird through the classifieds, this may not be the ideal forum. Some reputable breeders advertise in the classified, others seeking to sell may simply be dissatisfied owners. Try to find out why the previous owners are selling the bird. A pet show may be a good place to find birds for sale. Try to visit the show when the crowds are thinnest (weekdays, early in the morning may be a good time), to allow you time to talk to breeders and check out the birds in a less stressful situation. Your local vet may also be able to recommend a reputable breeder or dealer.

Always make sure your breeder keeps sanitary and pleasant conditions. The birds should appear well-cared for and well-fed, with ample space and clean cages. Look for a bird with clear eyes, and a clean vent. The bird should be alert and active, and able to demonstrate her flying abilities for you. Only buy a bird from a breeder you are comfortable with; respect your intuition. Avoid birds that seem unhealthy or unhappy, as they may not have been properly cared for. A reputable breeder will provide you with a copy of any agreements in writing, along with a written guarantee regarding your animal and should clearly explain any return policies. If your breeder fails or refuses to do this, find another breeder.

The temperament of a bird is often a product of its breed, but also depends on the individual bird's personality. Be sure to do your homework when deciding on a breed of bird.
