Read About Bird

Having a pet bird is a lot of fun, but it can also be a lot of responsibility. Here's everything you need to know about having a bird.

Why is a bird a good pet?

A bird is a good pet because it's a social, intelligent animal that can live for a long time depending on its species. Smaller birds, such as the budgie parakeet, have smaller life spans than larger birds, like birds in the parrot family, which can live up to 80 years, depending on how well they're cared for.

The bird is a very social animal and because of this, it needs a lot of attention. Birds like to hear human voices, they like to be in a room full of activity and they like to be talked to. So, if you're not ready to give your bird attention or you're not home enough to hang out with your bird, you might want to consider another animal. Your bird will get depressed if it's neglected, which is cruel and can also decrease the lifespan of the bird. Many birds, especially smaller birds, live well with other birds so if you're busy but want a bird, this option might be a solution for you.

Obviously having a bird as a pet is great because they sing. When they're in a loud environment, they can go absolutely nuts singing, making noise and rocking on their perch. When the room is quieter, they're singing is more contained and they often make little cooing-like noises.

How do I choose a bird?

Choosing a bird is not a decision you should take likely. You should consider the amount of space you have for the bird, the amount of money you want to spend on bird upkeep and maintenance, the amount of training you can give the bird, the longevity of the bird, the number of birds you want to get and the environment you can provide for the bird.

A smaller lower-maintenance bird such as the budgie or cockatiel is a good bird for first-time bird owners because they don't require a lot of training, have a fairly easy to maintain diet take up a smaller space.

For the bird novice, a larger bird such as the macaw, may be a good bird. Macaw's are very intelligent and colorful, but they are also very loud, need a lot of attention and have a diverse diet that is rather high maintenance.

When you've decided on a bird, make sure to shop around. Though pet stores are the sometimes the easiest places to get birds, they're not always the best place to buy your bird. A better idea would be to find a bird breeder that specializes in the species of bird that you want to get. Bird breeders can be found in the phone book or on the Internet. You should check them out and do a lot of research before diving in and buying your bird.
