Read About Bird Housing Containment

Planning to bring home a new pet bird? Here’s everything you need to know about Bird Housing and Containment.

What Type of Housing is Right for My Bird?

First things first; every bird will need a place to call his own. Even if you plan to let your bird have free run of the house, you’ll need a cage, with various perches, feeders, water dishes, toys and exercise equipment.

Most bird cages are made from uncoated metal. This is probably the best type of cage to purchase. You can find wooden and plastic cages, but these materials do not hold up to the abuse that a bird can dish out. Wooden cages also run the risk of pest infestation, and do not clean as easily as a metal cage.

You’ll need to take the size of your bird in account before you purchase a cage. Make sure the cage will be large enough for your bird (or birds, if you plan to have more than one) to stretch its wings and move around freely. And if you do not plan to let your bird out of the cage to fly, its house should be large enough that it can fly a bit inside.

Where Can I Find Bird Housing and Containment?

Online pet stores are a great place to find cages of all sizes and varieties. Your local pet shop or discount department is another good place to check. And you may even find a bargain in the classifieds or local garage sales – just be sure to thoroughly clean any used cage you acquire.
