Read About Bringing New Bird Home

There are some things you can do to make the transition to your home easier for your feathered friend. Here's what you need to know about Bringing a New Bird Home.

Cage Set-Up

When choosing where to place your bird's cage, put it near family activity centers but not right smack in the middle of them. Birds feel safest with their cages up against a wall. Putting the cage near a window is nice for the bird but make sure he's not baking in direct sunlight. Don't buy too many toys, as they can be overwhelming for your pet. Be sure to provide a variety of perches. After lining the cage with newspaper you're ready to bring your new pet home.

The Ride Home

Let your new bird ride home in a safe, secure box, no matter how excited you are about his new cage. Be sure there are a few air holes punched in it. Put a towel in the bottom to prevent him from sliding around. Place the box where it won't slide around or fall off the seat.

Home Sweet Home

When you arrive home, put your new bird in his cage and leave him alone. He needs some time to settle in without everyone whistling at him and jostling his cage. Give him three days to get acclimated. Don't force physical contact on your new bird. Just performing routine maintenance like feeding him, filling his water bottle and removing and replacing the cage liner will help him get used to you.
