Read About Bird Hunting

Bird hunting is a historical pastime shared by many men and now, women. Here's everything you need to know about bird hunting.

Getting started

Before you strap on a gun and hit the mountains or the fields, check with state regulations to see what kind of birdhunting license you might need. Also, since we're on the topic of licenses, make sure that you have a license to use your gun. Failing to get a license for either can result in large fines and a trip to court.

What kind of birds are good for bird hunting?

There are many kinds of birds that are good fun when it comes to bird hunting. One of the most common hunting birds is the quail. Because quail hang out on the ground, you don't have to hide out in a tree or other rubbish waiting for the animal to approach you. Quail hunting takes place in a field and the hunters are able to walk upright through the fields. Quail hunters usually bring dogs with them to stir up the birds and then retrieve them once they are shot.

Quail are not the only birds that hunters go after when they go bird hunting. Wild turkey, grouse and pheasant are also popular bird hunting animals.

Be prepared

Even though most bird hunting doesn't require you to sit in a little hut freezing your rear off, which is something you may have to do if you're deer hunting, bringing proper gear with you is essential to an enjoyable bird hunting expedition.

Do not skimp when shopping for bird hunting gear. Good bird hunting gear can be expensive, but it's worth it. Generally it's a good idea to stock up on Gortex items when you go bird hunting shopping. Gortex is durable, warm and moisture resistant.

Bird hunting requires longer boots, as you will be wading through tall grasses that might hide snakes, including poisonous ones, that can bite through socks and pants. Taller boots, thick sock and water proof boots will also protect you from burrs, the elements and wet ground.

You should also pick up a pair of brush pants, which are thick pants that resist all of the stickies that might trip you up on your trek through the fields while bird hunting. It's also a good idea to wear a couple layers of clothing, as the temperature will probably change as the day wears on.

Clothes are important when you're bird hunting, but do not forget your gun or bird bag. After all, you can't be successful at your bird hunting attempt if you don’t even have the means by which to bag your bird!
