Read About Copper Bird Bath

A copper bird bath is a beautiful lawn ornament that is also a majestic bird attraction. Here's what you need to know about a copper bird bath.

Copper bird bath basics

A copper bird bath comes in many sizes, but is usually copper from the bottom of the stand to the bowl that catches the water. Copper bird baths are beautiful because they catch the sun and often times fit into the décor of a yard better than a ceramic or clay bird bath. A copper bird bath is usually more expensive than a ceramic or clay bath however; they're usually custom made so you can get the bath designed to your specifications and decorative needs.

The basin in a copper bird bath is usually easy to remove and clean, which is important. Birds spread disease among each other and because several different species will be visiting your bath, you should make sure to clean it weekly.

Downsides to a copper bird bath

One thing that should be noted about a copper bird bath is that it doesn’t usually contain a source of running water. Copper bird baths usually contain just a basin. Sometimes at the bottom of the basin there is a water bubbler, which helps to keep the water in the bath fresh and moving. This is good, but birds are really attracted to running sources of water. They like the noise running water makes and many birds bathe while in flight and need a wet space to fly through rather than stand in.

Also, the surface of a copper bird bath isn't always the most inviting. Birds like bird baths that have textured surfaces because it helps them keep their balance when they're standing in the water, getting a drink, playing or taking a bath. If you're set on a copper bird bath, you can remedy this problem by putting stones or other rough material in the bottom of the bath so the birds have something more solid to stand one.

One other issue with the copper bird bath is depth. This too is a problem that can be solved. Birds do not like baths that are too deep or too steep. So, when you're looking into buying a copper bird bath, make sure the bath you purchase is no deeper than 2 inches in the center. Also make sure that it doesn't have a steep grade. If you've already purchased a copper bird bath and it's too steep or deep, you can put rocks in the bottom to get rid of the depth and the grade.
