  1. The Facts:

    Bird feeder had to be built in according to the type of birds you are interested in attracting, though there are some designs that work well for most breeds. Building your own bird feeder can be your contribution to nature and considerably inexpensive as compared to the readymade feeders.
  2. Supplies:

    The regular supplies of raw material (wood, Plexiglas, masonite), glue, paints, handy drill, hammer etc are needed. A post or wire or even a coat hanger would be needed to mount the feeder.
  3. What to Do:

    Select a design -- Whether you want a universal one or specific as in case of hummingbirds. Attach see through material walls on the edges of wooden frame. This helps in showing the level of feed. Plexiglas is a good choice. Make a removable floor for easy cleaning and access. Critical to provide area for easy flow of seeds. Follow this with a sturdy slanting rooftop that meets the walls.
  4. Special Considerations:

    Sunflower seeds in the feeder attract an array of birds like cardinals, chickadees, jays and finches. Feed of finely cracked corn attracts certain wilder species. Suet can be hung in the feeder for woodpeckers and nuthatches. Fried meat attracts chickadees. Feed of fruits and berries attract Mocki-birds and blue birds. The nectar recipe for feeders is sugar and water in the ratio of 1 is to 6. Hot water dissolves the sugar quickly but this syrup needs to be cool down before putting in the feeder.
  5. Other Tips:

    Flour that accumulates on the feeder flour should be regularly cleaned. Also mount the feeder in an area where you can see the birds but also near bushes or trees to provide the birds with avenues of approach. Higher placement of feeder discourages squirrels etc. Also there are special nectar feeders for birds like hummingbirds and orioles. It is fairly difficult to make these feeders at home and the store bought once with their speciality features are much better in this case.
