Choosing a cat breed is a difficult decision. Doing your homework is
important, to help you learn basics about the characteristics, average size,
grooming needs, and basic temperament of a breed. Choosing a cat
breed that suits you, your physical environment, and your family situation will
help ensure a long and happy relationship with your new pet.
When choosing a cat breed, consider the size of cat that would best
suit your situation. Cats can range in weight from as little as around five
pounds to as much as twenty pounds or even more. Keep in mind that ranges of
weight for each breed are based on averages, and there are as many cats well
above the average weight as there are well below.
Also consider that when discussing cat breeds by size, using weight as the
primary criteria can sometimes be a bit misleading. Some cats especially long
haired breeds; often appear to be larger than they actually are. The extra mass
of hair surrounding them means these cats take up more space than their weight
might otherwise indicate. By the same token, some breeds, most notably Bombay,
Burmese, and Korat, tend to be very heavy for their small size. These cats have
very compact bodies on fairly small frames, and many cat owners are surprised by
their weight when they pick up these breeds.
Consider
grooming needs when choosing a cat breed. Many cats are
good groomers, but they can always use a little help. Longhaired breeds, in
particular, require grooming. Most shorthaired cats can be brushed once a week;
longhaired cats should be combed daily. Regular
brushing or combing can help cut down on the amount of shedding. It
can also help reduce the frequency and severity of the cat developing
hairballs.
Temperament, while individual to each particular cat, is also something
important to consider when choosing a cat breed. If you are looking for a cuddly
kitty to curl up with, an Abyssinian may not be the best choice. While this
breed is affectionate, it is not the type of cat who will be happy curled up in
one place for long. In this case, a Bombay might be a better option, since they
tend to seek out affection from their human companions.
Size, temperament, and grooming needs are all important considerations when
choosing a cat breed. It is very helpful if you try to determine which
characteristics are the most important to you before you begin looking at actual
animals. Once you look a kitty in the eye, it can be hard to remember which
breeds are the most appealing to you. Every individual person, and every
individual cat, is different. Choosing a cat breed that’s right for you can be
the start of a beautiful friendship.
