Problem Definition:
In
feline urinary tract infection which is known as UTI, the urethra and
the bladder becomes painful and swollen. Such infections may be caused
by bacteria, fungus or viruses. It can also be caused by problems like urinary
stones and cancer.

Symptoms:
The most common symptom is
frequent urination. Cats will try to urinate but will not be able to do so. They
will sit in the litter box, sometimes they will
urinate outside litter box. In extreme cases blood can be found in their
urine. Not drinking water, sleeping too much, loss of appetite and unwillingness
to mix with other cats or owner are some of the other symptoms.

Duration of Problem:
The problem will need treatment
according to the level of seriousness of the infection. Depending on the cat's
age and level of infection the duration of problem will be different for
different cats. Three to four weeks time is needed for a complete cure.

The feline urinary tract
infection can be caused by bacteria and viruses. It is advisable not to let your
cat wander much outside.

The Treatment:
If the infection is at its
starting stage then it can be treated with medications. But at a higher level
infection the cat will have to be hospitalized for 2 to 3 weeks. The vet will
need to catheterize it. In this a small tube is placed in cat's urethra through
which antibiotics are provided to the infected area.

Prevention:
These urinary tract infections
can occur to any cat, there is no vaccination available for it. But maintaining
cleanliness can prevent these infections from affecting your cat.

Precautions:
Take care that your cat
drinks enough water, keep on visiting the vet till the infections are
completely cured. You must buy recommended food. The litter boxes for each cat
must be separate and maintained.

recommended by the vet. Provide clean and plenty of drinking water.

Feline urinary tract infections,
if treated in early stages, are not at all dangerous. But if you keep
on postponing the treatment then these infections might kill your cat.

have no genetic link ups.
