 -- Reasons and Facts
1.
Why Adopt:
When you adopt a cat from a
rescue organization, you are giving your cat a chance at having a wonderful
life.
2.
What Pet to Adopt:
If you are not sure what
breed of cat to adopt, going to your local shelter, humane society,
or rescue organization would be a great way to find what kind of cat you'd like.
If you are looking for a specific breed, you can talk to a rescue group that
rescues that particular breed, or talk to a breeder.
3.
When to Adopt:
Anytime is a good time to adopt a
cat, as long as you are
ready for the responsibilities it entails. A lot of times, after a
holiday, you'll find people selling or giving cats away after receiving it as a
gift and they are unable to take care of it. Be sure that you and your family
are ready to make a commitment for the lifetime of the cat.
-- Where to Look
1.
Online:
Using a search engine online, you
can find websites for different shelters and rescue organizations. Some relevant
organizations include the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Animal Shelter.org, and
MEOW Cat Rescue Organization, among others.
2.
Classifieds:
Some rescue organizations will
run ads when they have an abundance of animals needing a good home.
3.
Pet Shows:
There are not many rescue
organizations that take part in pet shows; however, a pet show is a good way to
research the type of cat you may want to adopt.
4.
Local Vet:
Your local vet may know of many
rescue organizations where you can
find the cat you want.
-- What to Look For
1.
Pet Temperament:
Look for a cat that has a good
even temperament.
2.
Pet's Surroundings:
Make sure the surroundings for
the cat are soft, clean, and that there is enough food and water.
3.
Pet's Health:
Ask the person that you are
getting the cat from if they have any records of vaccines. It would be a good
idea to take the cat to your local vet and have it checked out.
4.
What to Avoid:
You may want to avoid a cat that
is excessively
aggressive and ill-tempered, especially in an older cat as this may be a
behavior that could be difficult to overcome.
-- How to Choose
1.
Type of Pet:
It might be easier to find a
mix-bred cat over a purebred cat. It depends on your taste and what you are
looking for.
2.
Supplies & Equipment:
You will want to make sure you
have cat food, food and water dishes, toys, and a cat bed for the cat. Investing
in a
crate for the cat would be a great investment for taking your cat to
your vet or car trips.
3.
Expense:
When acquiring a cat, there could
be veterinary fees and possible travel fee's if outside of your community.
