Russian Blue cats are one of the 20 most popular
breeds of cats in the United States today. 
With their lean, muscular bodies, brilliant green eyes and silvery blue coats, Russian Blue cats are true showstoppers.
There are a number of stories involving the origin of Russian Blue cats, and it is uncertain which is the truth of the matter. Some believe that they are a natural breed, originating in the Archangel Islands in Northern Russia. In these stories, it was said that the cats were originally trapped for their beautiful coats, which have been compared to those of seals or beaver. Sailors are supposed to have brought them from the Archangel Islands to England and Northern Europe in the 1860s. For a while, the cats were known as Archangel cats, or sometimes Foreign Blues. Other stories say that Russian Blue cats were directly descended from the Royal Cats of the Russian Czars, and Queen Victoria was said to favor them as well.
Russian Blue cats began to gain favor in the United States in the 1960s and their popularity has been growing ever since. They are gentle, quiet, and affectionate. They have somewhat shy natures, but are very devoted and affectionate to the members of their family. Playful and intelligent, Russian Blue cats are said to be sensitive to their owners' moods, clowning about when in the presence of a crying child, or gently patting their owner's face with a paw to help chase the blues away.
Russian Blue cats are an immediately recognizable breed. The most noteworthy characteristic is, of course, that spectacular coat. It is a plush, double coat which stands away from the body and is sufficiently thick so if you trace a pattern in it with your finger, it will remain visible until you smooth it away. 
The coat of the Russian Blue is an even, bright blue with distinctive silver tipping of each hair. Russian Blue cats literally shine. In addition, all Russian Blue cats have large, rounded vivid green eyes, which creates a truly striking combination.
Russian Blue cats are remarkably undemanding cats who fit nicely into the busy lifestyles of their owners today. They will happily amuse themselves alone all day, and then be quite companionable in the evenings when their family is home. And, unbelievable as it may seem, that fabulous coat requires a minimum of time to groom. Many Russian Blue cats seem to enjoy grooming time as an extra opportunity to bond with their owners.
Owners say that Russian Blue cats look like they are smiling. What they are smiling about, it is said, is known only to themselves. They are the Mona Lisa of the cat world. Perhaps they are smiling because they are so happy to be able to provide such loving, affectionate companionship to their people. It is certain that their owners are smiling.
