 Grooming 101

Cats are known for being finicky about their appearance. They resort to daily grooming sessions to keep themselves clean and presentable. But that doesn’t mean you couldn’t help them out a little bit with regular grooming of your own.

You can cut down on the amount your cat will shed if you brush him regularly. Long-haired cats will also need assistance and regular maintenance to keep hair trimmed and free from body openings. And matted hair definitely needs attention.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Keep brushes easy to clean by placing an old piece of pantyhose over the bristles. The bristles will poke through the fabric so you can brush your cat, and cleanup will be as easy as removing the material and tossing it in the trash.

  • Use a soft brush to groom your cat. Always brush in the direction of his coat. Brushing against the hair pattern can cause discomfort and turn a grooming session into a session of Chase the Cat.

  • Don’t bathe your cat. Unless he just got into something particularly messy, brushing and his own tongue baths will be sufficient.

If you groom your cat on a daily basis, you can keep his coat looking sleek and shiny, and even help him be free of fleas. Long-haired cats need at least 10 minutes of brushing a day to keep their hair from matting.
