When it comes to housing your cat or offering shelter in temporary situations, you have a lot of choices and options. Here are a few products to consider:

  • Crates. A cat crate can be a great way to transport your pet to and from the vet or even on long trips in the car or plane. Crates come in metal wire models and plastic models. They’re both easily cleaned and taken apart for storing purposes. Make sure to get a crate that allows your cat to both stand up and turn around easily.

  • Temporary fencing systems. Ideal for keeping kittens contained in one general area, a temporary pet fence consists of separate panels that lock together. The advantage to these is that you can create a space as large or as small as you want, and give your kitty plenty of room to play around without leaving her out in the wide open. Because of the limited height of these fences, they’re not ideal for larger or older cats who can jump very high.

  • Modular cages. Not as portable as their single-unit counterparts, modular cages can be a great permanent home for your cats. You can buy multiple units that click together to create a custom-sized area. Accessories include scratching posts and multi-level shelves to satisfy the climbing urge.

Whatever type of containment system you decide to buy, make sure that you ease your cat into it and allow her to explore it on her own. If she feels forced or punished by having to be inside it, it will never become a place she chooses to be.
