Bringing New Cat Home

 Prepare the Area

Before you bring your new cat home, make sure you have all the supplies and accessories you’ll need for her comfort and happiness. These supplies include a litter box, some toys, proper food, bowls for food and water, and a collar. You will want to have these things (especially the litter box) already set up.

Prepare family members, especially children, for the new arrival. Let them know that the cat might be afraid at first, and may hide out for a few days. Make it clear that the cat shouldn’t ever be held by force, or teased or roughhoused, until she feels completely comfortable in the environment and you are more familiar with her temperament and better able to gauge what she can handle.

 The First Day

Let your cat explore the home on her own, at her own pace. Watch her as she cruises through the rooms, and stay aware of any potential trouble areas to take care of (i.e., house plants in her reach, yummy computer cords or wires, etc.).

Make sure she sees her litter box and has a clear and easy access to it. Otherwise, she won’t begin to use it. Most cats don’t really need to be trained to use the box; it’s instinct, and they’ll get the routine quickly. The box won’t be used if it’s placed in an area that is deemed unacceptable to the cat, however, so watch her during the first day to see whether she seems comfortable with where it is.
