The Basics of Travel

Here are a few travel tips to make any road trip more enjoyable for both you and your kitty:

  • Make sure she’s up for the trip by getting her up to speed slowly. Don’t make her first trip the long one; start out small with day trips or maybe a weekend jaunt until you’re confident that she can handle the travel. There’s nothing like being stuck halfway on your journey with a cat who just can’t take it anymore.

  • Proper identification is important. Update your cat’s tags, and include a temporary tag that lists the address and phone number at your destination as well. In the unfortunate event that you lose kitty along the way, she’ll have much more chance of being returned to you safely with proper contact information.

  • Stop often and allow time for potty and rest breaks. Think of your cat like a small child; she can’t travel very far without needing to get out and stretch her legs, or maybe take a potty break. Cats can also become dehydrated in hot cars, so give her plenty of water at each stop. Keep her on a leash at all times when not inside the car; even if she’s extremely well-behaved at home, the new environment might be too much of a temptation and she could bolt.
