Chewing Dog

A chewing dog is almost inevitable for any pet owner because let’s face it, dogs like to chew. Almost every dog owner has come home to find something destroyed, whether it is a shoe, a sock, articles of clothing or anything else that is not meant for a chewing dog.

A chewing dog is not doing this to specifically destroy your personal items; they are usually just exploring Imagetheir world. Puppies who chew are usually teething so it helps their gums feel better by doing so. Unfortunately, though, the chewing is often done on items of value to you unless direct this need elsewhere.

Dogs are not as smart as humans so you have to be careful that you don’t confuse them. You should offer items or toys that differ from all other items in the house. Their items need to be distinguishable. If you give them old socks or shoes to chew on then it is going to confuse them. You can’t truly expect them to differentiate your old Nike’s from your new ones, can you?

You have to take control of your chewing dog. This is going to require some training and some patience. First off, don’t leave your stuff laying around if you don’t want him to get into it. It is a simple as that. If you leave the dog inside while you are not home, block him off in a room where he has food, water and a couple of his own toys. This will better protect the items in your home that you don’t want him into.

Spend plenty of time with your dog. He has to learn how to behave around you and your guests. He needs attention and guidance that only a human can give him. If he is stuck in the kennel Imageor roaming around the yard all day then he will never learn.

If your chewing dog is completely out of his puppy chewing days, then he may be chewing for other reasons. Maybe he is bored and lacks entertainment. Make sure he has plenty of items of his own to play with and chew on. Provide new toys for him every once in awhile so he doesn’t tired of his old ones. There are all sorts of avenues you can explore.

Remember, every once in a while your dog might slip up and tear into something out of curiosity or simply because he is a dog. He is not doing it as a personal attack on you or your family. A chewing dog’s attention can always be redirected and reinforced; you just have to find the technique that works for you.
