Is Your Dog Overactive?

Many dog owners mistakenly think something's wrong with their dogs because when they get home from work the dogs are running around so fast that they skid into furniture. Most of the time, though, this is the normal behavior of a dog that's been confined and alone all day. Dogs are not loners. They like to play and socialize. He's not hyperactive. He's just happy to see you!

Overactive Play

When greeted by an overly excited dog, many pet owners attempt to suppress their fired-up friend. They quickly learn that this is as difficult as trying to stuff a live octopus into a canvas bag. Rather than trying to contain your dog, let him run and play to his heart's delight-within reason. Some dogs would stay outside for hours if given the chance. Let him play, but you decide when playtime is over. Classic playtime isn't the only form of play that will help your dog release energy. Long walks filled with interesting sights, sounds and smells can be equally satisfying. If it's convenient for your dog to have "play dates" with another dog, canine companionship can be just what your Overactive Dog needs to soothe him.

Overactive Attention Seeking

If your dog is suffering from separation anxiety, he may spend lots of time greeting you and may constantly look for attention while you're home. This may persist for hours, leading you to characterize him as an Overactive Dog. Most dogs that are experiencing separation anxiety exhibit other forms of nervousness such as nervous urination, self mutilation or excessive barking. Talk to your veterinarian about ways to alleviate your dog's separation anxiety.

Another reason your dog may be constantly seeking you out is that he doesn't have enough interaction with you. In this case, simply spending more time playing, walking and relaxing together can alleviate the problem.

Rewarding You Dog's Overactive Behavior

You may not enjoy the game of chase you have to engage in every night to get your dog on his leash, but he's having a blast. What's better than having your master's complete attention and also getting to run around like mad? As your mother used to say when you laughed at your brother as he made milk come out his nose at the dinner table, don't encourage him.
