Urinating Dog

ImageAll dogs urinate, but let's face it...some dogs do it a lot more than others. When urination is a problem that is out of control for your dog, you need to remedy the situation immediately. Here's everything you need to know about this behavior.

So You Have a Urinating Dog?

Dogs can develop urination problems for a variety of reasons. Besides the obvious reason of natural elimination, a dog might spontaneously urinate because:

  • He is excited or nervous. Try not to hype him up; when guests come over to the house, have them ignore him until he's calm.

  • He is being submissive. If you lean over him, stare him in the eyes, or chase him, he will perceive those behaviors as being slightly threatening. Only dogs with confidence issues have problems with submissive urination.

  • He may have a medical condition. He could also have weak control of his bladder muscles. Always consult a veterinarian if you think your dog needs medical help.

  • He has picked up the scent of another dog's urine. Simply smelling urine can provoke the urination response in dogs. If other dogs lived in the house before him, he may pick up their scent even if there are no obvious stains on floors and carpets.

What to Do With a Urinating Dog

In the case of submissive urination, scolding and punishing your dog won't do anything except make him scared of you. Instead, remove the threat and build up your dog's confidence and self esteem so he doesn't feel the need to make himself so completely submissive to you. Don't make direct eye contact, and when you speak to him, keep your voice low and monotone so you don't excite him more than necessary.

One way to build up your dog's confidence is by taking him to obedience classes. This puts him in a lot of situations where he can perform for you and receive praise. It also helps him feel more comfortable around other dogs.

If your dog is urinating because he's picking up the scent of a previous dog in the home, clean your carpets with an enzymatic stain and odor remover. Even if the carpet has been professionally cleaned, the proteins can remain in fibers. There are many products on the market today that include special lights that help you see the left-behind invisible spots your dog is noticing. Ask your pet supply professional for ideas on products to completely remove the scent of a urinating dog.
