Why The Dog Doesn't Like Strangers
A dog reacts to people in different ways and instinctively groups like people together. He may be scared of small kids because he had one be too rough with him or pull on his ears and tail before. He may also fear the adult male voice for various reasons. Dogs also react to how their owners react to people. Dogs can sense when you feel anxious or scared and they react in a similar way.
Most often poor socialization as a puppy is the reason dogs don't like strangers. It is important for puppies to be exposed to a variety of people and dogs early on so they can better handle new social encounters. Other times they simply want to protect their family and territory, which is purely instinctual.
When Fear of Strangers becomes a Problem 
In normal cases, a little stranger anxiety isn't a problem. It can become problematic, however, if your dog is overly protective (possibly a protective breed) and barks at every person who passes your house. This can be especially disruptive to your neighbors who have to hear it every time they come and go from their own homes.
What To Do If Your Dog Doesn't Like Strangers
- First, you must exercise responsible dog ownership and avoid potentially harmful situations with your dog. Know his limits and do not force him to socialize with strangers.
- Give strangers a warning about your dog's temperament. Don't allow kids to come up and pet the dog without your permission. You don't need to alarm anyone, but you can calmly explain that he may bite (even if he has not bitten before.
- Slowly build your dog's confidence in social situations and gradually get him used to greeting new faces.
- Give your dog the chance to be around strangers in a safe, controlled way. Offer treats and praise for good social behavior.
- If constant barking is a problem, cover all windows and take away the opportunity for the dog to see strangers that pass by or neighbors coming home.
