Dog House Training Puppies

ImageA little knowledge and a lot of patience will make dog house training puppies a lot less stressful for you and your new little friend. Here are the steps to mastering the pet parenting skill, Dog House Training Puppies.

Bringing Home Baby

One common source of frustration for the parents of new puppies is expectations that are just too high. When you first bring a puppy home, expect him to eliminate anywhere and everywhere for a while. Complete house training can take six months or more. Just like human babies, puppies need to eliminate very frequently. Lay newspaper down in a small confined area and let him do his thing for a while. This will do the double duty of relieving the pressure for you and teaching him to eliminate on newspaper.

The Next Step

As your precious puppy matures, he will begin to show a preference for a certain section of his newspaper carpeting. When you notice that only a section of the paper is being soiled, remove some of the surrounding newspaper. Leave a big border to Imageallow for mistakes. Gradually reduce the size of the newspaper toileting area. Once the puppy is consistently eliminating on a small area of newspaper you may move the newspaper to a more convenient location. But don't do this all at one time. Move the paper gradually. Don't be discouraged by setbacks. Your puppy is just a baby. Simply go back a few steps in the process and start over. Your patience and consistency will pay off.

Moving On

The more time you spend with your puppy pal, the faster he will be housetrained. Confine him when you can't be with him, but attend to him as much as possible. You want to be able to head off damaging and frustrating accidents as much as possible. Not only will this protect the carpet, but it will prevent him from developing bad elimination habits.

Take your pup to the potty area every 45 minutes or so. You should also have him "try" after playtime, eating or drinking and just after he opens his big beautiful eyes each morning. When he eliminates in the right spot offer up lots of praise and maybe a little tasty treat as reinforcement. Resist scolding him for eliminating in the wrong place. This can confuse the little guy and may set back dog house training puppies.
