Dog Potty

ImageIf you live in an apartment or condominium or the idea of taking Rover for late-night walks makes you shudder, it may be time to consider a dog potty. Never heard of a dog potty? Let's take a look at some of the features of this dog behavior tool.

What Exactly Is A Dog Potty?

If you've never seen a dog potty, it may not be what you'd expect--but it's exactly what your dog expects. Dog potties are basically large trays filled with real sod or artificial turf with a built-in drainage system underneath and some sort of absorbent material on the bottom. Some dog potties actually have little picket fences and a mini fire hydrant replica to encourage good aim.

How do They Work?

The dog potty is a few inches deep and is built to hold a section of real sod or artificial turf. If the tray accommodates real sod it will have water reservoirs and irrigation strips to allow for easy watering. The sod or turf rests on a sturdy plastic mesh that promotes drainage of waste onto absorbent pads or pellets. The turf or sod needs to be thoroughly cleaned or replaced periodically. A plastic liner underneath makes removing and replacing the absorbent material easier. Dog potty trays come in a range of sizes for different sized dogs and homes.

Why Buy a Dog Potty?

Dog potties are ideal for the following situations:

  • If you live in a high-rise apartment or condominium. Is Rover having trouble making it through the elevator ride without an accident?

  • If you're housebreaking a new puppy. A Dog Potty makes an aesthetically pleasing alternative to newspaper training.

  • If you live in very hot, cold or wet climates. Who wants to walk the dog when it's 20 below?

  • If you have an old or convalescing dog. If your dog has trouble walking, a dog potty set close to his doggie bed may be the perfect solution.

  • If you spend a lot of time away from home. If you find yourself racing home to let the dog out after a meeting that went overtime, consider a dog potty.

  • If you hate late-night and early-morning walks, or live in a neighborhood where it's unsafe to go out at these hours.

  • If you like to take your dog on trips with you where walking the dog is inconvenient.
  • If you want to make your life a little easier, a dog potty might be the solution.
