Expert Tips Dog Crates

ImageChoosing a crate for your dog is an important decision. Here's everything you need to know about Expert Tips - Dog Crates.

Why Get a Crate?

You might wonder what the benefits of using a crate will be. Many owners use the crate for training purposes, a housebreaking tool, a place of refuge for their dog, a safe place for their pet while they're away, or even a way to travel with their pet conveniently.

Expert Tips - Dog Crates

  • Size - The size of a crate is important, and of course, finding the right size means taking into consideration your dog. Whether she's a small Pom or a galloping Greyhound, she should be able to stand upright and turn around completely in her crate. She should also be able to lie down comfortably. But don't think it's just a matter of getting a large crate for any size dog; if it's too big, she won't be as comfortable as she could be, and she may even adopt the habit of soiling her crate. Dogs like cozy dens, so keep that in mind.

  • Material - Dog crates come in two main materials: metal and plastic. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, so consider your needs when choosing. Metal is usually a wire-type cage that allows for maximum air flow, which may be a benefit for furry dogs in the summer. ImageThe metal crates aren't as portable, however, and usually cost more. Plastic is lightweight, easily transported, and easily cleaned.

  • Placement - Once you decide on a crate and bring it home, you'll need to find a place for it. It's ideal if you're able to place it in one spot that your dog will learn is "her" area. Some owners like to have their dog's crate in the bedroom, and others prefer to have it in busier areas like the kitchen so the dog is easily included in daily activities.

Helping Your Dog Love Her Crate

Introduce your dog to her crate casually and happily. Place some treats or her favorite toys inside and let her explore the space at her own speed. Never force her to enter the crate, and don't make her use it regularly until she feels comfortable there. Never use the crate as a place of punishment, or she won't readily adopt it as her cozy home. Following these expert tips on dog crates is sure to keep you and your pet happy!
