Puppy Proofing Your Home
If you think baby proofing your house is a chore, wait until you see what a
puppy can get into exploring his new home. There is so much to see and get
into and he needs to be taught over time what he can and can't do. It is easy
not to train him and lock him in a room, go potty in the house, chew furniture,
and get into things he shouldn't. Curiosity often gets the best of puppies, but
it's your job to keep harmful things out of his reach. Provide a comfortable
place, like a
dog playpen, so he stays safe, when you can't be at home to closely watch
him. Keeping him in a crate with
toys or similar den-like structure will protect your home and your dog.
Early Training
Train your puppy early on the Come command so even if he gets lost he will
go to someone who calls him, even if they don't know his name.
Identification tags are necessary and you should also have a current picture
on hand in case he does get away from you.
Safe Driving with Your Dog
There are a variety of dog safety items available, from dog
barriers, to
dog car seat or
portable dog crates to transport your dog in the car or by plane. It is not
safe to let the dog roam free in a moving vehicle.
