Focal or localized, patchy, regional or generalized losses of hair.
Method(s) of Diagnosis:
For focal alopecias, minimum data base should include examination of skin scrapings, dermatophyte culture and a trichogram- microscopic examination of hair follicles. For widespread hair loss, the tests should include hemogram and serum biochemistries. Additional tests that may be needed for diagnosis include skin biopsies and endocrine profiles.
Disease Causes:
Localized Hair Loss: Demodectic mange, bacterial skin infection, fungus (dermatophytosis), injection site reaction and others such as hair loss from chronic rubbing of a collar or chewing at a spot. Patchy Hair Loss: often has a 'moth eaten' appearance- demodex, skin mites, fungus, drug reaction, lupus, hair follicle defects, genetic disease and others. Regional or large areas of symmetrical or asymmetrical hair loss: Discoid lupus erythematosus, hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, growth hormone responsive hair loss, seasonal flank alopcia, low or high estrogen, testicular cancer, hair follicle dysfunction, toxicities, and others. Generalized hair loss: Lupus erythematosus, Demodex, Dermatophytes, drug eruptions, and others
