Pet Shows: There are not many rescue organizations that take part in pet shows, however, a pet show is a good way to research the type of dog you may want to adopt.
Local Vet: Your local vet may know of any rescue organizations where you can find the dog you want.

Pet Temperament: Look for a dog that has a good even
temperament.
Pet's Surroundings: Make sure the surroundings of the dog are soft, clean, and that there is enough food and water.
Pet's Health:. Ask the person that you are getting the dog from if they have any
records of vaccines. It would be a good idea to take the dog to your local vet and have it checked out.
What to Avoid: You may want to avoid a dog that is excessively aggressive and ill-tempered, especially in an older dog, as this may be a behavior that could be difficult to overcome.

Expense: When acquiring a dog, there could be veterinary fees and possible travel fees if outside of your community.
