-- Reasons and Facts
1.
Why Adopt:
Many times, if you adopt a dog
instead of buying an expensive
purebred, you are saving that dog's life.
2.
What Pet to Adopt:
Do your research and make sure
the dog's personality will fit in your family.
3.
When to Adopt:
Any time is a good time to adopt
a dog and give it a good home. However, if your home life is presently in
upheaval over an illness or stress, you may want to wait a little longer.
Sometimes a new pet can add stress to your daily lives in the beginning.
Free Dog Adoptions -- Where to Look
1.
Online:
Most animal rescue and shelter
groups will list their adoptable dogs online. Most of them will have pictures.
2.

A lot of times, if you look in
the classifieds, you will find an ad reading, "Puppies,
free to a good home."
3.
Pet Shows:
Normally, you will not find free
dogs for adoption at a pet show. The dogs are usually purebreds. However,
sometimes you will see a show advertised for the benefit of a rescue group.

the pet checked out with a vet before adoption.
Free Dog Adoptions -- What to Look For
1.
Pet Temperament:
Every dog, even among the same
breed will have its own unique temperament. Know what you want when you visit
the rescue facility and spend a little time with the dog to make sure it is what
you want.
2.
Pet Surroundings:
Make sure the pet is being kept
in a clean, loving environment. Dogs can be traumatized by their surroundings,
causing
behavior problems in your home.
3.
Pet's Health:
As stated above, it is good to
have a vet check out your potential pet and even ask for a past medical history
if they have it.
4.
What to Avoid:
Avoid abused and neglected dogs
that have not been through re-training. They can make very devoted pets to those
who rescue them, but they need to be seen by a behaviorist to correct any
problems their abuse has caused.
Free Dog Adoptions -- How to Choose
1.
Type of Pet:
Do some research and
find out what kind of dog will fit best in your family. It is a disservice to
both you and the dog if you later find out it is not a fit.
2.
Supplies & Equipment:
You will need all the equipment
necessary to take care of your dog properly. This usually includes a collar,
leash, harness, food/water dish,
food, treats, etc.
3.
Expense:
Many pet rescue groups will allow
you to adopt free of charge and the rest will only charge you for shots and
spaying/neutering. Do not do a free adoption because you cannot afford to buy a
dog. Your reasons should be to rescue that animal only because once you have the
dog, you have to have the money to care for it properly, which includes regular
vet visits.
