Rose City Dog Show Schedule - Facts

1. Type of Competition:

   The Rose City Dog Show (Rose City Classic) is in fact a series of dog shows by different clubs that are held together for four days. The whole series is hosted and conducted by the Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon.

2. Location:

   The previous Rose City Dog Show Series was held in the Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center, Portland, Oregon. The show was held from January 19 through January 22, 2006. The next show schedule is yet to be announced.

3. History:

   The show is conducted annually. The show lasts for four days. This is one of the largest dog shows held in the United States. The first day sees 14 specialty shows from 14 different clubs. Most of these clubs are breed specific clubs and conduct shows for each breed. On the second and the third day conformation events and obedience and agility tests are conducted by the Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon. The last day of the entire series is conducted by the Tualatin Kennel Club.

4. Sanctioned:

   Every show held by the different clubs are sanctioned by the American Kennel Club. Judges from AKC judge some of the events.

5. Entrance Procedure:

   The entrance procedure varies with each show and the eligibility criteria are prescribed by the conducting club. However, all the basic eligibility rules that AKC prescribes apply. The dog has to be a breed recognized by AKC and should not have been spayed or neutered. Breeds not recognized by AKC, or those that are listed under the Foundation Stock Service by AKC, are not eligible to participate.

6. Classes:

   The breeds must participate for the conformation event under any of the following seven groups: Sporting Group (Irish Setter, Labrador Retriever, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Brittany, Pointer etc.), Hound Group (Afghan Hound, Irish Wolfhound, Beagle, Coonhound, Bloodhound etc.) Working Group (Black Russian Terrier, Doberman Pinscher, Great Pyrenees etc.), Terrier (Scottish Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer etc.), Toy Group (Chinese Crested, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Pug etc.), Non-Sporting Group (Bichon Frise, Lhasa Apso, Boston Terrier etc.) and Herding Group (German Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, Bearded Collie, Australian Shepherd etc.). There is also a conformation event for Miscellaneous Group (Tibetan Mastiff, Redone Coonhound, Swedish Vallhund etc.). There are also agility and obedience events.

7. Judging:

   The first day Sporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Non-Sporting Group are judged. The next three days all eight groups (Hound, Sporting, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding and Miscellaneous) are judged for conformation.

8. Awards:

   The dogs are awarded for each breed and each group. The Best in Show is the highest award most sought after. Awards for Junior classes are also given. Agility and obedience events have distinct awards. Apart from all of the traditional awards, the AKC Canine Good Citizen award is presented to the dog with excellent manners.
